Rogers confirms 911/GPS bug affects Magic as well as Dream

It looks like our nasty 911 bug is affecting the HTC Magic as well as the Dream, Rogers sent out SMS messages yesterday giving Magic owners essentially the same information that the Dream owners received a few days earlier. Unfortunately, it is looking like Rogers Customers that elected to go for the Dream/Magic upgrade have not received this second SMS from Rogers. I have send a message to @RogersMary regarding this and hopefully she will be able to get it straightened out.

***UPDATE***  Received my SMS at 4:00PM AST, looks like Mary managed to get it straightened out.

I will mention again that I passed this information on to HTC and Rogers through @RogersMary back in December, you can read about it in my post here. Mike Schmidt has updated his post on the iwantmyonepointsix.com site to reflect this new information and @RogersMary has posted into various forums including our Android Forums thread UPDATE: From RogersMary – Dream owners to be offered exchange to Magic.

Here is the text of the post from @RogersMary

Hi All-

We are in the process of contacting all of our Magic customers by text message asking them to disable GPS location on their Rogers HTC Magic device to ensure all 911 calls complete.

The same issue was identified on the Rogers HTC Dream, as communicated on January 15. At the time, our testing indicated that the Rogers HTC Magic was not impacted. However, through continued precautionary testing of the devices, we discovered the issue is replicated intermittently on the Magic device as well. HTC is working on a software fix that we will make available as soon as possible.

In the meantime, Rogers HTC Dream customers need to follow these steps:
1) Select Menu
2) Select Settings
3) Select Location
4) Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused our customers. Our priority continues to be customer safety. As with the Dream, we are contacting via text all affected customers and we have immediately requested that the device be taken off the shelf until HTC implements its upgrade

Thanks
-Mary

I take issue with HTC on this bug as they informed me through @RogersMary that GPS and 911 was a “NON-ISSUE” in Canada. At the time I wasn’t sure what they meant by this, but in hind-site it was because the enhanced 911 service wasn’t available in Canada at the time. I now have to wonder if this issue is due to a bug in Android 1.5 or in how HTC’s hardware works with it. If it’s Android 1.5 then can we expect to see this pop up on the LG Eve? How about the HTC Hero over at Tellus, I wonder if this issue will extend to there as well?
